Can I paint ballet shoes?

My three year old's k-3 class is already working on halloween costumes. My daughter insists she wants to be June from Little Einsteins. June wears a purple ruffled dress and red ballet slippers with a matching ribbon tied around the ankle (like a pointe ribbon). I can't find red ballet slippers anywhere so I need to find some way to make the white or pink one's that are available red and attach a wide ribbon to the back. Here's a pic:

Can I paint ballet shoes?
In the past I've always had my students use permanent markers to color thier shoes. Because it is a marker it does not change the shape of the shoe like soaking them in something might, and you can go back and touch up spots easily if needed. You can use markers on the ribbon you want to attach as well. Make sure you let it dry completely and sometimes it helps to use a hair dryer to really seal it. Sharpies are great and they come in almost any color (definatly red!) Good Luck!
Reply:Great Idea, Thanks. I also like the idea of spray painting. They will probably only be worn once. Report It

Reply:Yes you can, {I am just quitting ballet} Most dance stores should sell proper paint, I recommend that. Get a small bottle, You only should need a little.
Reply:It is best to dye the shoes. You can find shoe dye in most grocery or drug stores. Since the shoes are already white or pink to dye them red should not be too difficult.
Reply:If you buy the ballet shoes then you should beable to dye them. You could probably just let them soak in purple food dye (or just blue and red dye). That might work.
Reply:i wouldnt paint them. when the paint dries it will crack and make an ugly mess. i think u could use fabric paint though. u could look on e-bay or something.
Reply:Buy regular ballet shoes and paint them red. I suggest you look for red ribbon on the internet though, because you can't paint ribbon.
Reply:you can take red spray paint and paint the shoes. just make sure you let them dry first.
Reply:Spray paint away! They are for Halloween...I got lots of use out of many a pair of spray painted ballet slippers as a kid!. Besides, my daughters dance school has them spray paint shoes depending on the costumes each year. The dance shoe supply store is where we got the paint last year only because the studio required a certain color. Put newspaper in the shoes to stretch them out to minimize the creases and spray. It took a couple of coats for good coverage in all of the cracks, but they looked great! I think dying them would be way too messy! Check kids consignment stores for less expensive ballet shoes too, if you have not bought them yet. Good luck!
Reply:You can take white ones and with Ritz dye just follow the instructions and dye them.

In the 1950s people would have their white pumps spray died to match the prom or wedding party dresses.

The ballet shoes should be a sinch.

you can also just get them damp and paint them with red acrylic paint and dry them with a hair dryer. I think the dye is better though.
Reply:If they are leather you can use leather paint.
