How to keep floor cleaner for baby?

We have hardwood floors in our entire house, accept for the bathroom, which is tile. How can we keep them cleaner? I suggested to my husband that we start taking our shoes off and only wearing slippers.. our son is going to be crawling soon and all over the floor. Thanks. ;-)

Yeah wearing your shoes in the house isn't great, actually it isn't great for your floor either as dust and dirt will etch the finish.

However please keep in mind that many studies have shown that keeping a child's environment too clean causes many problems. I would aim to sweep the floors once or twice a week, and mop every two weeks or so. Just use a very basic water and soap solution -different hardwood finishes need different cleansers. Some are fine with vinegar, vinegar damages other finishes. Some can take dish soap (food safe) some can not. Obviulsy spot clean as needed.
Reply:We don't wear shoes in our home. We also bought a Big rug that she can play on from Walmart. We put it away when she is done playing.
Reply:I would invest 15 bucks in a Swiffer and use that daily to pick up any extra dirt/small crumbs that get on the floor.
Reply:They make the squirt and mop murphy's oil soap that I like, and also Anderson (the type of hardwoods we have) makes a good cleaner in a blue bottle.

Shoes are a no-no in my house...my hubby yells at me because I will be right rude to his friends if they come in all muddy and not take those shoes off.

For quick clean-ups I use the swiffer.

You wont be as concerned about the floors as what she is putting in her mouth ;)
Reply:taking your shoes off is a big start. also sweep/swiffer the floors everyday (1 or 2 rooms). mop the whole house once every week or 2. be sure to use cleaners that aren't going to hurt your son!
Reply:Taking off your shoes is great! We do that. Also, get a swiffer and a dust-push-broom of some sort and if you do that everyday in between heavy cleanings that will help keep the floor clean.
Reply:Yeah we don't wear shoes in the house we take them off at the door. Other than that regular cleaning.
Reply:Taking your shoes off is about the best your going to do. The one thing I learned with hardwood floors is they seem to be impossible to keep clean. Obviously you aren't going to let them get disgusting. But Swiffering once a day and mopping a couple of times a week should be sufficient. Remember that you want to keep your baby in a clean but not sterile environment. There are many good bacteria that he will pick up and needs to. If he isn't exposed to bad bacteria, then he will not ever develop a strong immune system.
Reply:Remove all dust etc.NOTHING TO BE PICKED UP BY HIM

HOPE YOU KEPT WALL TO WALL CARPET AND BEING CLEANED UP !
Reply:the shoes would be the main thing....sweep everyday or get a dust mop
Reply:I have one of those Swiffer Wet Jets that i use on the kitchen floor. They are inexpensive, and super simple just takes a few minutes. It wouldnt take time at all to maybe do your floors with that nightly or every other day, and then maybe once a week go all out with the mop, bucket and murphy's.
Reply:Taking your shoes off will help but indeed it's not good to be too clean, exposure to some dirt is actually good for small children! It's already been said a couple times but I would like to add a couple links to articles you may want to read. Good luck with your little boy!
Reply:you can only do so much...i wouldnt worry about your baby crawling around on the floor...they get dirty, and its not going to hurt your baby.
Reply:yea definatly NO SHOES in the house!! and try one of those squeegy mops for hard wood floors and just use it every day...it should be easy to use...good luck
