Where do i keep my baby parakeets between feedings?

I'm planning to pull them at around 3 weeks old. i've been raising parakeets forever, but I've never tried to hand feed them before. I figure that if i leave them in the box with their parents the parents will feed them, right? so that kind of defeats the point. so at three weeks do they still need to be kept warm? would like a shoe box with a light hole be good? or should i leave them in the breeding box?

I'm lucky enough to have a nice brooder, but I know a lot of people use a glass aquarium with a heating pad underneath and a towel over the top. They adjust the temp by rolling back the towel when it gets too warm. You'll need an accurate thermometer with this kind of setup. I've never done parakeets so I can't advise you about the temperature, but I have a temp chart for the kinds of birds I raise and you can probably find one for parakeets. The temp starts high and drops gradually as your birds get older. When they are fully feathered they can handle regular room temps.

Are you going to be able to take them to work with you? They can't wait 8 hours while you are at work.

There are people who are going to tell you that if you haven't handfed before you will probably aspirate them, but really, it isn't rocket science and don't know of any first timers who have actually aspirated a bird. Just take it slow at first untill you develop skill and confidence. It would be helpful if you know of someone who has handfed before to help you the first time or two.
Reply:The older they are when you pull them, the harder it is to start them handfeeding. I would suggest 1-2 weeks old. I always used a 10 gallon aquarium with 4 layers of paper towel on the inside, a hand towel under the aquarium, and a heating pad under the towel under half of the aquarium. If you put them on the heated side, they have the option of moving off of the heat if they get too warm. Drape a towel over the top to prevent drafts, with just an inch or so open on one end.If you use a cardboard box, you will have to change boxes constantly as they will poop alot and it will soak into the cardboard and keep it damp and cause bacteria to grow. Using an aquarium with paper towels allows you to change out the paper towels daily to keep it dry and clean, it also allows them to get used to the daily activities around the house, and allows you to see them everytime you walk by.
Reply:I have a hospital cage where I keep any that are sick or chicks to raise...it keep them warm. My Dad made it for me and here it is
