What products do you think I should buy new and which ones should I buy second hand?

Car Seats: Stroller: Gyms or Play arches, Crib:, Crib Mattress, Changing table, Dresser, Rocker, Clothing, Sock and booties Shoes baby monitor baby tub

I'm confused as to buying new vs looking for seconds.. your help is appreciated.

Thanks.

What products do you think I should buy new and which ones should I buy second hand?
I'm big on 2nd hand things. It saves a lot of money and babies are expensive!!

I buy almost all of my sons' clothes 2nd hand. Other thjan an occasional outfit for pix or special occasions. Plus I feel a lot better when my little boy messes up a $0.50-$2 shirt than a $10+ shirt LOL

The exception is shoes-they mold to your feet. Used (or any ill fitting) shoes can cause anyone foot, leg, knee, hip, back, shoulder and neck problems, but can cause even bigger probs for a tot learning to walk.

Becareful buying a used crib and make sure it meets safety standards (see sources)

And don't buy a used car seat It's a huge safety issue. (see sources)

Plug monitors to make sure they work.

Try strollers with weight of child in them (use a 10 lb bag of sugar or flour) before buying I bought a used stroller once and got jipped--it pushed fine empty but once I put my child in it it wouldn't turn.

Reply:I have heard never to buy used crib mattresses at all. Also i wouldnt suggest buying used car seats either. If car seats have ever been in a vehicle involved in a wreck, they must be replaced....so buying a used one you have no idea for sure. Things like dressers, changing tables, all those items i would say would be ok. I would wash anything down thoroughly. Shoes arent a good idea for a baby getting ready to walk, because the shoes tend to be worn differently by different children, and it can effect the way your baby learns to walk. Good luck!!
Reply:Anything to do with hygene i would say you should by new.. things like a dresser, rocker and all those you can buy 2nd hand
Reply:Car Seats should always be new, the rest are okay used, just check for recalls on most products before buying used.
Reply:second hand: crib, changing table, dresser, rocker, clothing, socks, booties, shoes, baby tub

I would only buy these second hand if they are in great shape and have a good history

buy new: stroller, car seat, baby monitor, mattress

I would buy those new because with thing like a car seat you need to know if it has been in an accident or not. if it has ever been in an accident then the law is that you should get a new one because that one is no longer good to use. And if you get it second hand then there is no way of telling if it has been in an accident. so pretty much, things for safety i would buy new. everything else i would get second hand. Good luck
Reply:changing tables, dressers and a rocker you could buy second hand and baby monitors..but as for the bath tub I'd buy a new one and definitely a new mattress...everything else i guess doesn't make a difference
Reply:Carseat I would definately buy new, and bottle nipples, but other then those two the rest of it is alright to borrow, or get handed down, especially clothes are good cause they look new for a long time and the baby usually doesn't wear any clothes for too long. As long as the crib is sterdy and the rails aren't spaced apart then its good. The matress depends on how old it is. And monitors, as long as they work it's alright.
Reply:car seat--new (you dont know if its been in an accident or is unsafe--its illegal to sell used ones here)

stroller--used..why not.(but as a note its very beneficial to buy a stroller travel stystem that comes with the carseat and the stroller together, it is very convenient and probably the best baby thing i own. Also stay away from umbrella strollers they have been known to damage the babies retinas.

crib--new--it could have been through a lot of abuse if its used and the mattress might not be very good.

Gyms or play arches---used if its in good shape and cleaned up

crib mattress--new for sure, a one year old jumping on it is bound to make it less firm and safe

changing table--used unless you want it to match perfectly with your crib.

Dresser--used unless matching is an issue and and its sturdy and not wobbly.

Clothing ---new and used--its nice to clothe baby in new outfits but used clothing is usually in good shape and they grow out of them like crazy

sock and booties--new and used...booties used..socks used but they usually are in poor shape by then so i buy them new because they are also so cheap

baby bathtub-probably new who knows what kind of microbes are hiding in there after many uses. But used probably wont hurt..a preference thing

baby monitor--used if your sure it works..id probably go used for how often I actually used it.

another thing is if you know the people the used stuff is coming from..id buy a used crib from someone i knew and trusted but id buy a new mattress if it had a lot of activity in it from their baby. Car seat and stroller id also get used if it was someone who had never been in an accident or dropped it and i knew them to be honest.
Reply:the only things I buy used are a swing, rocker, some clothes, booties, shoes, bath tub, depending on the condition I've bought cribs and crib mattresses, changing table, dresser.

I always buy a car seat new because you never know if a used carseat has been in an accident. I like to shop so I will sometimes buy new clothes for my baby, but if you have a second hand store, that is the cheapest way to go since they grow fast. I have a 3 yr. old, so I'm saving his good clothes for his baby brother. It will save me the money later.
Reply:You'll probably want to get a car seat brand new, due to the fact that your child's safety is at stake. I wouldn't trust a second hand car seat, even if it looked like it was still in good condition. You'll also want to buy a new mattress, you don't know if a used mattress could you lice, or other bacteria living inside of it. Items such as a crib, dresser, changing table, etc, could be bought second-hand though.
Reply:id never buy a used car seat it could have been in an accident and have stress cracks you cant see. as far as everything else there is nothing wrong with seconds. just make sure that if you are buying used that there are no missing parts and if its a crib that it meets safety standards. clothes and toys can all be washed.
