Ernest Hemingway is one of the most recognized names of American literature. His style is unmistakably distinctive as are the cast of reoccurring characters he depicts. What is it about his style, stories and characters? What makes Hemingway so Hemingway-ian?
At the time Hemingway was writing, most of all existing well regarded works had six figure word counts, plenty adjectives and adverbs to go around and all tucked inside a much discussed setting. To describe a work of Hemingway, take all of the afore mentioned and do a one eighty. Hemingway's sentences were always terse, his shortest story stringing just six words long! For sale: baby shoes, never worn. He explains the logic behind simple wording with “Boiling it down, always, rather than spreading it thin.” His words packed a quick punch. And that is often how his stories play out, with one climatic, traumatic punch.
How can I improve my paper?
Don't say Hemingway-ian, too elementary, use a different word that's appropriate for your age level like captivating, distinguished or something more descriptive. Don't use cliches like, "packed a quick punch." Do something original. You're paper sounds like you're writing it for your peers to understand, remember that a teacher won't appreciate, " do a one eighty." For all you know, they might not even know what that is. When using examples, explain what you doing, like in paragraph 2 line 5, I got lost at what your were trying to point out, so write in front of it For example, " ....." Other than that your writing style was interesting, but I don't think you should make it too personal otherwise the teacher will count off points.
Reply:from what i learned in college u have to avoid "to be" verbs such as "is, are, was, were, etc" and replace them with a better word. i read the first paragraph and counted a lot. remove a lot of them.
Reply:I think tou summed it up quite nicely !!
